Introduction

The pages here are pretty much all a "work in progress" and are primarily for my own reference. Most of the pages are Ubuntu Linux related, but there is some gadget and home cinema related stuff too. If you find something useful then that is a happy bonus :-)

This is a kit list for my stuff at home, as you will see from the specs, this is not a list for bragging rights ;-)

Here is how I flash BIOS, Firmware etc from a Linux machine with no access to a floppy drive or Windows.

File System Stuff

I have recently decided to migrate my workstation, laptop and disk arrays to XFS. I've also migrated my netbook to XFS as well. The page below explains how I arrived at that decision and how I tune XFS to get optimal performance.

Server Stuff

I have several servers at home (running under VirtualBox) which provide DNS, DHCP, media streaming and print services for the house LAN. I have some other servers that run my websites and mail servers. The page below explains how I setup my servers.

Multimedia Stuff

I have dabbled with using Linux as a media server for steaming content to my PS3. Here are my notes.

Having created a media server it needed populating with content. Here is how I currently do that.

I bought a full HD camcorder in early 2010, I'm interested in importing clips from the camera to Linux in the correct way the page below is what I've learnt so far.

Desktop Stuff

I only use Linux workstations, and only use Ubuntu as my workstation OS. Anything useful regarding how I use/configure my Ubuntu workstation will can be found below.

Virtualisation

I currently use VirtualBox for visualisation at home, but plan to experiement with KVM soon.

Programming

I have contributed to several Open Source projects over the years, and even run a few of my own. Pretty much all my programming efforts are for work now, but occasionally I have a little dalliance outside of work. Any scripts, programs or notes can be found below. You'll probably find it useless ;-)

Source Control

I used to host my own source control servers but now use Launchpad. Below are my notes for setting up Bazaar and Subversion servers.

Development Environments

I don't use Eclipse any more since the majority of my development is either either Python (for which I use WingIDE) or sheel script (for which I use Gedit).
