Linux

Hardware

Here is how I flash BIOS, Firmware etc from a Linux machine with no access to a floppy drive, MS-DOS or Windows.

Server

I have deployed production systems on Debian (stable only) and Ubuntu (LTS only). IMO they are the only operating systems that ease the administrators effort, have excellent community support and rock solid reliability.

I used to maintain pages and pages of detailed instruction about how to setup Debian and Ubuntu servers. Each time I setup a server (which is surprisingly often) I would refer to my wiki pages and copy/paste the steps. Not very efficient.

I’ve started migrating all my server setup to a suite of (largely) automated scripts, the page below explains how to use those scripts.

SSH

SSH is great, but I am forgetful. Some helpful notes.

I’ve recently migrated from Fail2Ban to DenyHosts, here are my notes.

SSL/TLS Certificate

I want to enable TLS/SSL where ever possible. I am currently using certificates signed by StartSSL.

In the past I use certificates signed by CACert.

Workstation

I started with Slackware, then moved to CRUX circa 2003, the dabbled with Fedora in 2004 before settling with Ubuntu where I’ve stayed ever since.

I’m currently considering using a different distro at home since I really don’t like Unity and I’m bit irked with the indicator non-sense.

Gnome 3 Remix

This is an unofficial remix of the Ubuntu operating system where the Unity desktop environment is replaced with the GNOME desktop environment.

Some blog posts about this project.

Mint

Debian

Debian doesn’t ship with firmware by default, so the following might be useful.
